Canary Islands

The Spanish arrived in the early 15th Century but did not fully succeed is pacifying the natives for a century. First they cultivated sugar cane, and then wine, including for the English trade. Santa Cruz in Tenerife and Las Palmas in Gran Canaria became stops on the route to the Spanish Americas. The islands were attacked by Ottoman pirates in 1501 and 1585, and the Dutch in 1599.

The Inquisition was introduced to Las Palmas in 1504. From around 1600 a number of New Christians moved to the Canaries, but persecution led to flight to Holland and England from around 1620.

Lucien Wolf’s book Jews in the Canary Islands: Being a Calendar of Jewish Cases Extracted from of the Canariote Inquisition in the collection the Marquess of Bute [219] and paper on Crypto-Jews in the Canaries [220] was researched from Inquisition documents in the Bute Collection [221].

Ceuta

Ceuta was captured from the Moors by the Portuguese in 1415. After Philip II of Spain annexed Portugal in 1580 a lot of Spanish settlers arrived in Ceuta, and the colony remained Spanish when Portugal regained its independence.

Melilla

Melilla was captured in 1497, following the Reconquista of the Spanish peninsula from the Muslims. It survived sieges in 1694–1696 and 1774–1775.

Oran

Oran, in modern Algeria, was captured by the Spanish in 1509. The Jewish population was tolerated as a go-between with the local Muslim population.

In 1669 a particularly fanatical Catholic governor expelled Oran’s Jews. The poorer ones went to Nice [222], while the richer carried on to Livorno [223]. It is possible that Oran’s Jews were Mizrahi rather than Western Sephardi, but their descendants were absorbed into the Western Sephardi world, demonstrating how fluid are identities.

In 1614 Francisco Gutiérrez a fruitier and fishmonger of Mers-el-Kebir, near Oran was arrested in Madrid, for judaising. He was the husband of María Romana.
